Liverpool must bide their time before they can enter discussions over a move for leading target Jeremy Jacquet

Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on the Reds’ pursuit of the young centre-back. The 20-year-old is under contract in France until 2029, so there is no immediate rush for the club to sell a key player.

Liverpool remain interested in Jacquet as they prioritise strengthening their backline. However, Romano claims they will need to wait until the summer to approach the centre-back, and even then it won’t be straightforward.

Romano has reported that Rennes have ‘no intention’ to sell Jacquet this month but they could negotiate a sale at the end of the season.

He said: “Rennes want to keep Jacquet in the January window. Rennes believe that Jacquet can only leave for crazy money. They want a club record fee, around €65m (£56m) or €70m (£60m).”

Chelsea are also heavily linked with Jacquet and have been exploring a move for the exciting French player. However, the Blues are reportedly only willing to spend in the region of €40 million (£35m) to €50 million (£43m).”

Naturally, there has been no agreement between the two clubs, as Rennes are holding out for significantly more money from any interested party.

Liverpool continue search for new centre-backs

Bolstering the Liverpool defence is one of the current priorities at the club. The Reds have come under fire recently due to their lack of options, especially as their recent clash with Bournemouth forced Wataru Endo into a centre-back role following an injury to Joe Gomez.

The England star has seen his Liverpool career littered with fitness problems and many reports suggest he will leave Anfield this summer. Ibrahima Konate is also expected to depart, as he is still yet to reach an agreement over a new contract.

Signing a new defender is something Liverpool desperately need but their pursuit of Jacquet will need to be put on ice until at least the summer window.
