Former Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton scored a stunning goal for Lyon on Sunday to help the French team win 5-2 at Metz.

Morton was sold by the Reds last August after barely playing under Arne Slot during the 2024-25 Premier League title-winning season. The 23-year-old admitted he "had to find another path" after struggling for minutes under Slot, who is feeling the heat at Anfield.

Liverpool is enduring a tough campaign under Slot, with the team sixth in the Premier League table after losing 3-2 at Bournemouth over the weekend. Pressure is building on the Reds boss, with Xabi Alonso now available following his departure from Real Madrid.

Morton reminded everyone of his talent against Metz. With Lyon already two goals up, the 23-year-old produced a first-time strike on the edge of the box to make it 3-0. Goalkeeper Jonathan Fischer didn't even dive, such was the ferocity of Morton's shot.

The former England youth international also provided an assist during Lyon's convincing win on Sunday. He's now got two goals and three assists to his name this season, having played 26 times across all competitions, with Lyon fourth in the Ligue 1 table.

Morton will be delighted with his form in France after a difficult final season on Merseyside. The youngster broke into Liverpool's first team under Jurgen Klopp during the 2021-22 campaign, making nine appearances to help the Reds win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

He then completed back-to-back season-long loan spells in the Championship with Blackburn and Hull, playing 87 games over two years. Morton was added to Slot's squad for the 2024-25 season, but he made just five first-team appearances across all competitions.

None of those appearances came in the Premier League. Morton believes that Slot didn't trust him enough to give him a run of games in the starting XI. "I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much," Morton told SPORTbible.

"In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability. When I got my opportunity in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say.

"I stuck at it, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the U21 Euros, which was amazing."

Morton helped England win the U21 Euros, with his Liverpool teammate Harvey Elliott being named as the Player of the Tournament. Both players were allowed to leave Anfield last summer, with Elliott completing a loan move to Aston Villa.

Morton added that he had a "few conversations" with Slot throughout the season. He continued: "I personally disagreed with the limited amount of game time I got last season, but that was out of my control. I did everything I could.

"I played for the U21s when a lot of players wouldn’t. I did everything in my power to stay fit and mentally focused for when my time came, and I still got limited opportunities. I just wanted to play.

"I don’t think I was asking for too much, even if it was coming off the bench in the Premier League... anything, to be honest."
