Everything you need to know about Andy Robertson's proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur and why it broke down...

Deal collapses: Liverpool have now officially blocked Andy Robertson’s move to Tottenham Hotspur despite recent negotiations between the two clubs. After initial talks last week, the Anfield hierarchy decided to "pull the plug" on any potential deal for the experienced defender.

Spurs' offer: Tottenham were prepared to offer a £5million package to sign the Scotland captain before his contract expires this summer. Head coach Thomas Frank identified Robertson as a crucial addition, providing leadership and top-level experience to his squad.

Retention decision: A decision to keep Robertson was influenced by Liverpool's current lack of depth and specialised defensive options. While the club acknowledged his eight-and-a-half years of incredible service, they ultimately felt they could not afford to lose him - as things stand.

Defensive crisis: Liverpool's injury list is a major factor, too, with several key players currently side-lined by long-term knee concerns. Both Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are out for the season, leaving head coach Arne Slot with a severely depleted back-line.

Failed replacement: The club attempted to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at AS Roma to facilitate the deal, but the Italian side refused to cooperate. Without a guaranteed replacement ready to step in, Liverpool felt forced to retain Robertson for the remainder of the campaign.

Player professionalism: Robertson remains a professional figure in the dressing room and has not pressured the club to allow a move to London this month. He is expected to play an important role as they competes in the Champions League, the FA Cup and a tight Premier League top-four race.

Management support: Both Slot and captain Virgil van Dijk have publicly voiced a desire to keep Robertson at the club. Slot has emphasised his wish to retain his current squad, while Van Dijk specifically highlighted Robertson's ongoing importance to the team's stability.

Tottenham shortage: As for Tottenham, the failed deal leaves them short-staffed at left-back, following an injury to Ben Davies. Frank is currently left with few senior options, relying heavily on Destiny Udogie and the inexperienced 19-year-old newcomer, Souza.
