Durant on his Durability: 'I'm Paid to be Available and Play'

At the ripe age of 37 years old, Kevin Durant is still one of the best players in the NBA, routinely showing off the talent that will have him go down as one of the greatest scorers in basketball history.

Durant can score at all three levels with ease, using his length to shoot over defenders or put the ball on the floor with his elite ball-handling.

The Houston Rockets superstar is a 15-time All-Star, four-time scoring champion, two-time NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP, and the 2013-14 league MVP — to name of few honors on Durant's extensive list of accomplishments.

Despite being in his late 30s, the Texas product is having a tremendous season for Houston, averaging 26.3 points while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 40.6 percent from beyond the arc.

The Rockets currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 27-16 record.

Durant's best ability this season has been his availability, as the rangy forward has appeared in all but two of his team's games so far in the 2025-26 season.

And the 11-time All-NBA star feels it's only right for him to be playing this much, despite being in the twilight years of his career.

Durant Embraces Heavy Workload

Speaking to reporters following Houston's 111-104 win over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, Durant was asked about the heavy minutes he's been asked to play by head coach Ime Udoka this season.

Durant's answer was simple, saying being ready to play so much is the least he can do when he's paid millions to play in the NBA.

“I feel great, that’s what I get paid to do,” he said. “I get paid 50-something million dollars to be available and play, being there for my team whenever they need me to be there."

Durant is earning $54.7 million in the final year of a four-year, $194-million contract he signed with the Phoenix Suns ahead of the 2022-23 season. He signed a two-year, $90-million extension with the Rockets in October. As of 2025, Durant's career earnings sit at just over $500 million.

Durant dropped a game-high 32 points in the win, and led the Rockets in playing time with 40:41 on the court. It was the ninth time this season that he played over 40 minutes in a game.

"It's on me to prepare the right way so I can be ready for 40-plus minutes. I'm preparing for 48 minutes a night."

To say Durant's career has been plagued by injury would be an understatement. The Washington D.C. native has missed well-over 300 games during his 18-year NBA career, having only played a full 82-game season once (2009-10). He notably missed 155 games between 2019 and 2023 alone with a slew of injuries, including a torn Achilles and MCL sprains.

"I get that people are concerned because of my age and I've had some injuries in the past, but I feel solid, and the coaching staff has been doing a good job with the rotation. I want to play more, I want to play more minutes and I just want to help the team as much as I can."
