Chelsea have been dealt a transfer blow as they look to strengthen this month.
Chelsea have finally been dealt the fatal blow in their bid to land a reported transfer target. The Blues have been working to bring in a new arrival or two this month as they look to hand Liam Rosenior the extra tools he needs to lead a successful top four bid.
Rosenior has enjoyed an impressive start, leading Chelsea to four wins in their last five games across all competitions, including a Premier League away win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
Chelsea are now back in the thick of the top four race, and while it’s still very early, the club’s decision-makers will be pleased with their appointment decision. There is still plenty of the season to play, though, and the club know Rosenior could do with a couple of extra pieces, especially given the long season includes the Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
A centre-back is on the wishlist, although the Blues might have to wait until January to get prime target Jeremy Jacquet, and so Aaron Anselmino has been called back from Borussia Dortmund. That might satisfy Rosenior for now, while the Blues will also keep an eye out for a good midfielder deal in the back-end of the window, with around a week remaining.
Another target Chelsea were keen on is Barcelona attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez, who became available in a loose sense due to the fact he had been playing on a cheap contract due to his relatively recent emergence in the first team.
Lopez has 10 goals and 10 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions, and that explains why the 22-year-old is such a sought-after player. Chelsea and others are said to have pushed to see if they could steal Lopez from Barca’s loose grasp, but the chase now seems to be over.
That’s because the Blaugrana have agreed a new contract with Lopez, tying him down to first-team terms and a long-term contract. Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “BREAKING: Barcelona verbally agree new deal with Fermín López valid until June 2031. Fermín rejected to leave in August and he’s set to sign new deal soon, with salary improved. Could be signed already this week, as @victor_nahe reports.”
Chelsea will have to look elsewhere.
