The Los Angeles Lakers have engaged the Golden State Warriors about a potential trade for Jonathan Kuminga ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline.
Per insider Evan Sidery, the Warriors have not shown “any legit interest” in the Lakers’ trade package of Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber and a 2032 second-round pick.
“The Lakers and Warriors have conducted brief trade discussions involving Jonathan Kuminga,” Sidery reported on Monday.
“Los Angeles appears willing to offer the expiring contracts of Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber alongside a 2032 2nd-round pick.
“Golden State is not showing any legit interest in LA’s assets.”
Lakers Trade Target: Jonathan Kuminga
Kuminga, sidelined indefinitely with a bone bruise, obviously has very little trade value, even though his non-risky contract contains a Team Option for 2026-27. That said, the reported Lakers trade offer for the Congolese forward gives the Warriors very little incentive to pull the trigger. Some would argue it’s a disrespectful offer, if true.
While the oft-injured Vincent is shooting a mediocre 33% from the field, Kleber is no longer the player who was a vital cog of the Luka Doncic-led Dallas Mavericks teams that made deep playoff runs. The German big man has shot 32% from the field in his limited appearances with the Lakers, and he turns 34 later this month.
The Warriors have absolutely nothing to gain by adding either Vincent or Kleber, given that they already rank No.2 in the league in bench scoring and have enough second-unit firepower in the form of Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton. Furthermore, they have a younger version of Kleber in Quinten Post.
Perhaps the Warriors could be enticed if the Lakers were to include Rui Hachimura in their Kuminga trade package. Hachimura, shooting a career-best 42.7% from three, would be a low-risk acquisition on his expiring salary of $18.2M.
Other Kuminga Trade Suitors
Besides the Lakers, teams such as the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks have reportedly shown interest in a Kuminga trade. It was previously believed that the New Orleans Pelicans were another suitor, but insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson reported otherwise earlier this week.
“A high-ranking Pelicans source cast major doubt on the possibility of Kuminga landing in New Orleans, stating bluntly: ‘Don’t think the interest from the Pels is real,'” wrote Robinson, naming the Lakers, Kings and Mavs as the three top Kuminga suitors.
So, who do the Warriors seek in a Kuminga trade?
Per multiple reports, the Warriors covet Keon Ellis from the Kings and may even be willing to absorb Malik Monk’s contract in a potential deal. As for dealings with the Mavericks, the Warriors have reportedly set their sights on Daniel Gafford and/or Naji Marshall — two players who’ve garnered leaguewide interest ahead of the NBA trade deadline. The Mavs are reportedly seeking a first-round pick for both players.
The Warriors may have little leverage to dictate terms in a potential Kuminga trade, especially after the 23-year-old was diagnosed with a bone bruise over the weekend. They may be forced to accept pennies on the dollar and proceed with their playoff push.
