Liverpool have reportedly contacted Xabi Alonso to enquire about his availability amid a poor run of form that has seen the Reds go five Premier League games without a win.
Saturday’s late defeat to Bournemouth came despite Liverpool fighting back from two goals down, with Amine Adli scoring the winner deep into stoppage time.
According to reports, Liverpool have sounded out Alonso’s representatives, though there is no indication that Arne Slot’s position is under threat. Slot has, however, been assured by the club hierarchy that he will remain in charge until at least the end of the season.
Alonso is currently out of work after being dismissed by Real Madrid earlier this month following tensions within the squad and defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Despite questions directed at Slot and Virgil van Dijk about Alonso links, momentum continues to build behind the former midfielder, who is said to be open to a future move to Anfield.
Slot refused to entertain questions last week about the possibility of Alonso replacing him. “This is one of the weirdest questions I have ever received,” the Dutchman responded.
“I am working here for over one and a half years and I am enjoying my work. I won the league last season and obviously we have struggled in the league this season. I don’t know what to say.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Xabi Alonso will return to work very soon and believes the Spaniard is ready for a new challenge and a fresh opportunity. Romano told DAZN Football: “Look, at this stage, just to clarify something on Xabi Alonso, I maintain my position on his future.
“So we will see Xabi back at work very soon, but very soon. Xabi doesn’t want to take a break. Xabi believes he can have a new challenge, a new opportunity, quite soon. So he doesn’t want to wait maybe one year or two years, as sometimes managers do. He’s ready for a new opportunity. That’s very clear.”
