Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks reacts after a collision with LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.
A reported drama surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s representation added a new layer of intrigue about his uncertain future in Milwaukee and has drawn the Los Angeles Lakers before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
According to TrueHoop’s Henry Abbott, powerful super-agent Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports, has been angling to represent Antetokounmpo amid growing uncertainty about Milwaukee’s long-term direction. Paul, whose clients include LeBron James and former Lakers star Anthony Davis, is widely viewed as one of the league’s most influential power brokers.
Report Details Potential Rift Between Giannis and Longtime Agent
Abbott reported that Antetokounmpo has been close to parting ways with longtime agent Alex Saratsis of Octagon, citing frustration over the lack of progress toward a trade.
“So it was alarming to hear a story of real drama, that Giannis was close to firing his longtime agent Alex Saratsis over his failure to get Giannis traded from the Bucks,” Abbott wrote in his Monday Substack.
Abbott cautioned that agent maneuvering is a constant undertone of NBA life, particularly when franchise players face uncertain futures. Still, he cited league sources who believe a change in representation remains a realistic possibility.
As of Monday, Antetokounmpo remains represented by Saratsis. Abbott noted that revised NBPA rules now allow a player to switch agents after a seven-day waiting period, down from 15 previously, keeping open the possibility of a change before the deadline.
Klutch Sports–Lakers Relationship Under Renewed Scrutiny

Any potential Klutch involvement in Antetokounmpo’s future would come at a delicate moment for the Lakers.
The relationship between Klutch Sports and the Lakers has faced increased scrutiny since the Anthony Davis trade, which multiple reports said was completed without advance knowledge of Davis or Paul. That episode was followed last offseason by the Lakers and James failing to reach a contract extension, fueling speculation about the stability of the partnership.
ESPN Report Alleged Rift, Buss Pushes Back

A recent ESPN report further intensified debate, portraying a widening rift between Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, James, and Klutch Sports. The report cited team sources who described Buss as having privately grown frustrated with what she viewed as James’ “outsized ego” and Klutch’s influence.
Buss forcefully denied that characterization.
In a statement released to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Buss said the report unfairly pulled James into private ownership matters unrelated to her appreciation for his impact.
“It’s really not right, given all the great things LeBron has done for the Lakers, that he has to be pulled into my family drama,” Buss said. “To say that it wasn’t appreciated is just not true and completely unfair to him.”
Paul also dismissed the ESPN report on his podcast, denying claims of tension between Klutch Sports and Buss.
“Who gives (expletive),”Paul said. “Idon’t, right? Youdon’t knowwhat’s true, what’s not true. But wherethere’s smoke, there’s fire.I seen some of thestuff that came out about it and obviously theytalked about different scenarios in terms of power that we may have…And there (expletive) sure should be appreciation for a guy like LeBron.”
Lakers Lack Clear Trade Path at Deadline
Despite the renewed speculation, the Lakers do not have a realistic trade-deadline pathway to land Antetokounmpo.
Los Angeles currently controls only one tradable first-round pick, either 2031 or 2032, limiting its ability to compete with teams capable of offering multiple premium picks and young assets.
The Lakers would be better positioned this summer, when they could trade up to three first-round picks and when Austin Reaves could sign a near-max contract, which could be used as a salary-matching piece in a potential blockbuster.
Summer Looms Larger Than Deadline for Lakers
While Milwaukee continues to publicly project stability, skepticism persists across the league.
NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that multiple teams remain engaged with the Bucks on potential Giannis deals, and Andscape analyst Marc J. Spears recently said on NBA Today on Monday that he believes Antetokounmpo has already played his last game in a Bucks uniform.
For the Lakers, the convergence of agent intrigue, internal politics, and asset timing has sharpened focus on a familiar reality: their most viable Giannis window, if one exists, likely opens after the season, not at the deadline.
And once again, Klutch Sports sits at the center of the NBA’s biggest questions.
