CLEVELAND, Ohio — The [Cavs](https://www.cleveland.com/cavs) will likely have two representatives in Los Angeles during NBA All-Star Weekend.
Both showed why Monday night.
Cleveland recovered from a slow start and continued its recent surge with a 114-98 win over the Orlando Magic at Rocket Arena. It was the Cavs’ sixth win in the last seven games and second in the last 48 hours against Orlando.
Ahead of tipoff, Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said his team was “starting to figure it out” — even if it’s not always perfect.
Monday was an illustration of that. In both aspects.
Cleveland got off to a sloppy start, with miscues on offense and defense.
Six turnovers and countless breakdowns later, the Cavs had only led for 34 total seconds and were in an uncomfortable 10-point hole.
They trailed for a large portion of the second quarter as well, before surging ahead thanks to a late scoring binge. Cleveland reclaimed the advantage with 27.9 seconds left in the first half.
It never gave it back up.
Orlando got as close as one early in the third quarter. It cut the Cleveland lead to eight around the midway point of the fourth and then again at the 3:53 mark. But just like Saturday night in Central Florida, the Cavs held off the late Magic push, with All-Star hopeful Donovan Mitchell at the center of that thwarting.
Mitchell, who was snubbed as an All-Star starter last week and must wait until Feb. 1 to find out if he makes it as a reserve, sure looked worthy. He finished with a game-high 45 points on 15 of 25 shooting, 5 of 8 from 3-point range and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line in 35 dominant minutes.
Evan Mobley added 20 points and nine rebounds. Mobley also had two blocks, including the 500th of his career, becoming the fifth Cavs player with at least that many. He is also the youngest in team history to reach the 500-mark, doing it at age 24.
Second-year forward Jaylon Tyson, named a Rising Star earlier Monday night, finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 35 impactful minutes. It’s his ninth straight game reaching double figures, the longest streak of his young career.
The Cavs — playing without Darius Garland (toe), Sam Merrill (personal) and Max Strus (foot surgery) — shot 53.2% from overall and 44% from deep.
Orlando, losers of four straight, got 37 points from Paolo Banchero. Desmond Bane chipped in with 19 while Anthony Black had 14.
At one point early in the game, during a mid-quarter stoppage, the Cavs made the news official inside the arena: Tyson had been named a Rising Star, one of 21 rookies and sophomores selected to participate in the annual midseason showcase of the league’s brightest young players.
As the fans rose to their feet and showered him with applause, teammates on the bench celebrated the accomplishment.
He has earned it.
And on Monday night, he looked the part again, helping the Cavs continue their season turnaround with a fourth straight victory.
