Liverpool and Chelsea are both trying to sign the Ligue 1 starlet.
Liverpool ae firmly in the transfer tussle to sign a highly-rated youngster, reports suggest.
It has been suggested that the Reds are ‘part of the conversation’ to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. The centre-back is already a regular starter for the French side despite being only 20.
This season, Jacquet has started all 17 Ligue 1 games he’s been available for, with Rennes sitting sixth in the table.
Chelsea have been in pursuit of the France under-21 international during the January transfer window although Rennes have been reluctant to sell as they pursue European qualification. However, the Brittany-based outfit may be open to a deal in the summer - and they could demand a fee as high as £60 million.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have made calls about the availability of Jacquet, as well as Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Speaking to DAZN, Romano said: “It's a crazy battle for the player. Save the battle because Jeremy Jacquet is probably one of the most talented defenders in the world.
“Chelsea remain involved in the race for Jeremy Jacquet. There are conversations ongoing, advancing well on the player's side but still no green light from Rennes. Rennes insists to keep the player now, sell him now for the summer, so this could be the solution.
“Chelsea are in the mix, for sure. But Liverpool are calling, Liverpool are part of the conversation for Jeremy Jacquet. Liverpool are part of this race to sign Jeremy Jacquet and Bayern as well because in the summer, there is Kim Min-Jae who eventually leaves. So Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern are all involved and let's see what the player will decide to do and what Rennes will decide to do because they want up to €70 million. I think this will be one of the big stories in the next days or even weeks because this deal could be agreed even after the closing of the transfer window.”
Liverpool are set to be in the market for at least one new centre-back at the end of the season. As things stand, Ibrahima Konate will leave the Reds as his contract expires and he’s yet to pen fresh terms.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez see their respective deals conclude in 2027. Van Dijk will be aged 36 while Gomez has had his well-documented injury issues over the past few years. Liverpool signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma last summer but he is recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Along with Jacquet, Liverpool have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck.
