‘Main favourite’ – Arsenal now pushed to front for €100m mega-transfer

Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are all in the picture to sign Atlético Madrid’s Julián Alvarez.

The Argentina international spent two years at Manchester City and left them for the La Liga side in August 2024.

He managed 40 goals and 13 assists of which 11 goals and five assists are from this season. The striker’s performances have clearly not gone unnoticed, and Arsenal are one of the clubs chasing him.

El Desmarque covers the latest on Mikel Arteta’s side, Barcelona and the Champions League winners.

According to them, ‘Arsenal are the main favourite’ to sign the 25-year-old. It has been made clear the Gunners are looking at him for the summer and not in the winter market.

The Premier League side signed Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting last summer. He has nine goals and an assist so far, but his performances wouldn’t have fully convinced Arsenal. Therefore, the north London club are looking at the World Cup winner.

Barca are also in the picture. Earlier in the season, we covered claims from the Catalan press that Alvarez remains the main target for next season.

El Desmarque now backs it up as Hansi Flick’s side are looking at him to replace Robert Lewandowski. However, Barcelona face a financial hurdle to submit a concrete offer.

PSG’s interest in the South American isn’t new. They tried to sign him before he joined Diego Simeone’s side, but the player rejected them. The report state Alvarez made this decision after contacting an Argentine who played for the Ligue 1 side.

Barca’s financial situation and Alvarez already rejecting PSG clears path for Arsenal to sign him. As things stand, the Gunners or another club haven’t officially registered their interest.

“There’s no interest at the moment. I haven’t met with anyone,” Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo told the website.

Arsenal or any other club would have to spend over €100m to sign him after this season.

Alvarez hasn’t scored a goal for more than a month. Atlético president Enrique Cerezo has talked about it, and Estadio Deportivo have relayed his comments.

“He’s a magnificent player, and we don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he’s fighting. The other day he had an incredible game, but he didn’t score. He’ll score eventually; we shouldn’t be worried about it. He has to score the goals he needs to score,” he said.
