January 27 – Barcelona fans, press and VIPs were soaked on Sunday in a downpour that their unfinished Camp Nou stadium’s roof could not prevent.

As Hansi Flick’s side beat Real Oviedo, torrential rain swept through the region and straight into Barça’s €1.25bn renovation project.

Water poured through concourses, walkways flooded, journalists scrambled to protect equipment, and even club president Joan Laporta was left soaked in the VIP areas. Forget the traditional Blaugrana scarves – umbrellas became the accessory of choice.

The club has just recently moved back into Camp Nou in November after two seasons at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, with construction delays already pushing the project far behind schedule. Capacity remains restricted, with the stadium still resembling a building site in many areas.

Fans shared footage of rain gushing like waterfalls through openings inside the stadium. Laporta said: “We all got wet. We knew it could happen… The stadium is under construction, and anything that needs to be fixed on the go, we will address.”

It showed the dangers of bringing football back to a stadium which is not yet fully rebuilt – and caused much embarrassment for Barcelona.

After all, the Camp Nou is supposed to be a rival to Real Madrid’s newly developed Santiago Bernabeu, not a swimming pool.
