FSG could make a real statement after 'calling' for a defender, Liverpool are desperate for change - opinion

Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window has become apparent.

After being heavily linked to the Reds for some time, Marc Guehi joined Manchester City this month.

Liverpool’s reason for not signing Guehi has been shared, but it seems an odd call given the problems facing Arne Slot.

Joe Gomez could leave in 2026, while Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of June.

Even if both players stayed, Liverpool only had three fit senior centre-backs before Gomez went off injured against Bournemouth on Saturday.

But at least the Reds are thought to be looking at potential defensive reinforcements moving forward.

Liverpool need to act on Jeremy Jacquet interest

An update from Fabrizio Romano this week has said that Liverpool are calling for Jeremy Jacquet amid interest from a couple of other clubs.

He said: “Don’t forget what I told you about Jeremy Jacquet because for this defender there is a battle ongoing. Bayern calling, Liverpool calling, Chelsea want him.”

Jacquet is a quality stopper who would improve the Reds’ backline instantly, solving the depth crisis as well as being an upgrade on Gomez.

Not only would it give Liverpool some much-needed defensive solidity, but it would also be a real statement of intent from FSG.

The January transfer window has been a write-off for fans so far, who have had to watch Guehi and Antonie Semenyo move to Manchester City instead.

But signing Jacquet ahead of Chelsea, whom Liverpool are in direct competition with for a Champions League place, would no doubt boost all associated with the club.

The alternative situation, however, is pretty bleak and could cost the Merseyside outfit in the long run.

FSG approach could set Liverpool back

If Liverpool don’t move for Jacquet and choose to see out the rest of the season with their current options, things could get ugly.

Chelsea, Manchester United or both teams could take the final Champions League places ahead of them.

Liverpool could then be left with a situation in the summer where they need to sign at least one centre-back, possibly two if Gomez or Konate leave. But other clubs would be much more attractive propositions, given they could offer Champions League football.

The obvious solution would have just been to get a deal done for Guehi at the start of January, but with just under a week of the window left, there’s still time for FSG to fix things.
