Liverpool to block Trey Nyoni loan despite European interest

Liverpool are not expected to sanction a loan deal for highly rated midfielder Trey Nyoni this month, despite interest from a number of clubs across Europe.

Nyoni has been coveted by a host of clubs in the January transfer window after establishing himself on the fringes of Liverpool’s first-team squad.

But The Athletic‘s James Pearce reports that the 18-year-old is now set to stay on Merseyside for the rest of the season.

That comes with Arne Slot considering him valuable cover to his senior squad, with Nyoni making the bench for each of the last nine games in all competitions.

Nyoni will continue to be eligible for Liverpool’s youth sides and could captain the U19s in their UEFA Youth League round-of-32 clash with MSK Zilina next week.

He could also be trusted with an increased first-team role in the second half of the season after coming on as a substitute in recent wins over Tottenham, Wolves and Barnsley.

Liverpool’s stance over a loan for Nyoni comes with an alarming lack of depth in Slot’s squad, magnified by long-term injuries to Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

With Joe Gomez forced off in Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Bournemouth and Ibrahima Konate also absent due to the death of his father, centre-back duties were given to midfielder Wataru Endo.

Endo’s versatility means he cannot solely be considered cover in his natural position, which will no doubt have informed the club’s decision on Nyoni.

Luke Chambers, who joined Championship side Charlton, is the only player to have left Liverpool on loan this month, though further outgoings are expected before the deadline on February 2.

Chief among those is striker Keyrol Figueroa, who is joint-top goalscorer in this season’s Premier League 2 but is not a regular starter for Liverpool’s U21s.

The United States youth international is rumoured to be closing in on a loan move to Porto, before which he is likely to sign a new long-term contract with the Reds.

Centre-back Amara Nallo is another who had been made available but it remains to be seen if any decision on his departure has changed following long-term injury to Wellity Lucky.

Should Liverpool allow Trey Nyoni to leave on loan?

Nyoni is now expected to stay at Anfield as midfield cover for the rest of the season, but the 18-year-old may have benefited more from half a season of regular football elsewhere.
