Chelsea Issued Hands Off Warning After Sending Scouts To Watch 4 Cap Ecuadorian Left-Back On Sunday

Chelsea had representatives in the stands to keep an eye on Genk left-back Yaimar Medina last weekend, according to reports in the Belgian media.

Het Laatste Nieuws claims that a Blues scout was spotted watching Genk’s 1-1 draw against Cercle Brugge at home on Sunday.

They believe that Liam Rosenior’s side would “like to take” Medina, but they are unlikely to succeed with a bid before the transfer window shuts on Monday evening.

Genk see the 21-year-old’s sale as “unnegotiable” this month, but it is definitely a move to keep a close eye on.

What do fans need to know about Medina?

The fullback is an international teammate of Moises Caicedo‘s, having been capped four times by Ecuador. He received his first cap back in September 2024 against Brazil in a friendly.

Medina started his career at Independiente del Valle, just like Caicedo did as well, making 66 first-team appearances before joining Genk for a fee just under €5m in January last year.

The defender can be deployed in multiple positions, having previously played on the wings and in central midfield, but most of his football this campaign has been as a left-back or wingback.

Chelsea would loan him out to Strasbourg

Het Laatste Nieuws report that Medina would not become part of the Blues’ first-team squad straight away if he were signed.

Like Mike Penders, who was also bought from Genk, the plan would be to send Medina out on loan to fellow Blueco club Strasbourg in order to gain more experience.

With Rosenior already having Marc Cucurella and Jorrel Hato as options on the left-hand side of defence, giving Medina the chance to blossom elsewhere does make sense. As things stand, though, Genk are not expected to sanction a move in January.
