Despite spending recent seasons on the fringes of NBA rosters, Mac McClung continues to make a compelling case for another opportunity with his sustained production in the G League.

On Monday night, playing for the Chicago Bulls’ G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls, McClung erupted for 40 points in a 116-103 win over the Oklahoma City Blue.

The 27-year-old shot 14-of-22 from the field, knocked down six three pointers, and added six rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals in 39 minutes.

Chicago Bulls Guard Continues to Dominate G League

The performance was not an outlier, McClung has been delivering at a high-level throughout the entire season.

Through 23 games, he is averaging career-highs of 25.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 52.2% from the field and 36.9% from three-point range.

Over the opening 12 games of the regular season, his scoring average has climbed to 27.7 points per game, the highest in the G League, while his 91 total assists rank eighth league-wide.

Even by his own lofty standards, Monday’s outburst was not a season-high. It marked McClung’s third 40-point performance of the year.

On November 20, he poured in season-best 42 points against the Iowa Wolves, shooting 13-of-16 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from beyond the arc, while also dishing out eight assists.

Earlier this month, McClung also recorded a career-high 17 assists in a single game, pairing that playmaking display with 31 points.

Across 127 career G League games, he holds averages of 23.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 50.9% from the field and 39.8% from deep.

One of the G League’s most recognizable figures, McClung combines sustained on-court production with off-court visibility. While notoriety alone does not earn contracts, it often keeps players on the radar longer than most, and in this case, that attention appears increasingly justified.

Another NBA Opportunity Could Be Near

Despite carving out a reputation as something of an NBA journeyman since entering the league undrafted in 2021, McClung is arguably playing the best basketball of his career.

He briefly secured a multi-year deal with the Indiana Pacers in late October, averaging 6.3 points across three appearances before being waived. He then returned to the Bulls organization for a second stint, having first spent time there as a rookie during the 2021-22 season.

Throughout his NBA stops, the 6-foot-2 guard has rarely been given the runway to play through mistakes or settle into a defined role. Still, his consistent G League excellence continues to force teams to reassess what he brings to the table.

As NBA benches increasingly prioritize offensive punch and secondary playmaking, McClung’s skill set remains relevant and increasingly difficult to ignore.

As the season moves forward, teams drifting out of contention often shut down veterans after the All-Star break and pivot towards development, creating opportunities for G League standouts to earn short term NBA looks.

Notably, McClung is currently on a standard G League contract, leaving him free to sign with any NBA team on a standard or 10-day deal, as his two-way eligibility has expired, meaning he has no obligation to remain tied to Chicago beyond his role with Windy City.
