Andy Robertson's rumored move to Tottenham could still be on the cards – but plenty of things must fall into place for the left-back to leave Liverpool this month.

Robertson emerged as a surprise target for Spurs last week following a serious injury to Tottenham left-back Ben Davies. Liverpool vice-captain Robertson was identified as an experienced option to replace Davies, and it seemed apparent that Liverpool was willing to let the 31-year-old leave.

However, following Liverpool's loss to Bournemouth over the weekend, in which the Reds' lack of defensive depth was underlined, it was widely reported that the move was off.

Joe Gomez sustained another injury on the South Coast, adding to Arne Slot's defensive selection issues, while Robertson was introduced for Milos Kerkez at half-time due to concerns over overload surrounding Kerkez.

Allowing Robertson to leave would seemingly only exacerbate Liverpool's defensive issues, but journalist Ben Jacobs said that the move is not yet dead in the water.

Jacobs reports that a fee of around £5 million ($6.9 million) plus add-ons has been agreed between Tottenham and Liverpool for Robertson, but that Liverpool will only allow Robertson to leave if a replacement has been lined up.

One option that is being explored is recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma, but there is no recall clause in the deal, meaning that Roma must agree to allow Tsimikas to return to Merseyside.

Tsimikas is not a regular starter for Roma, and the Italian club is reportedly hunting for a new left-back this month.

If Roma manages to sign a new left-back, that would open the door for Tsimikas to return to Liverpool, thus also opening the door for Robertson to move to Spurs.

Liverpool and Robertson remain relaxed over the situation, and Robertson's professionalism has been noted by the Reds.

Robertson has seen Kerkez take his place in the Liverpool team this season, and is understandably keen to play more frequently in the lead-up to the World Cup.

The 31-year-old has made 22 appearances for Liverpool in 2025-26, but only half of those have come as a starter, and he has lined up in just one of Liverpool's last nine games in the Premier League.

As for Tsimikas, even if he doesn't return to Liverpool this month, he is expected to do so at the end of the season as Roma does not have an option to make the move permanent.

Roma is unlikely to want to do so anyway, considering how the loan spell has gone so far.
