Trey Nyoni is set to stay at Liverpool for the remainder of the season despite the young midfielder's lack of game time this season.

Nyoni has appeared just five times for the Reds this term, making two starts in the Carabao Cup, and appearing as a very late substitute in Premier League games against Tottenham and Wolves in December, as well as in the third round of the FA Cup against Barnsley earlier this month.

Nyoni is only 18 years old, so there are clearly no concerns about a lack of first-team game time hindering his development in the coming months.

Despite barely playing under Arne Slot this season, he has been a regular fixture in gameday squads, having been an unused substitute on 16 occasions in all competitions.

Nyoni has attracted interest from clubs across Europe over a possible loan move until the end of the season, but the intention is for him to remain in and around Liverpool's first-team squad in the months ahead.

Three other academy players – Trent Kone-Doherty, Amara Nallo, and Kieran Morrison – are all said to be on a list of players who could leave Liverpool on loan this month.

Liverpool has no intention of allowing any first-team players to leave this month – although Andy Robertson could be an exception if the circumstances surrounding a possible move to Tottenham change in the coming days.

Latest on Andy Robertson's possible exit

Robertson emerged as a surprise target for Spurs last week following a serious injury to Tottenham left-back Ben Davies.

Liverpool vice-captain Robertson was identified as an experienced option to replace Davies, and it seemed apparent that the Reds were willing to let the 31-year-old leave.

However, following Liverpool's loss to Bournemouth over the weekend, in which the Reds' lack of defensive depth was underlined, it was widely reported that the move was off.

Joe Gomez sustained another injury on the South Coast, adding to Arne Slot's defensive selection issues, while Robertson was introduced for Milos Kerkez at half-time due to concerns over overload surrounding Kerkez.

Allowing Robertson to leave would seemingly only exacerbate Liverpool's defensive issues, but journalist Ben Jacobs reported on Tuesday that the move is not yet dead in the water.

Jacobs reports that a fee of around £5 million ($6.9 million) plus add-ons has been agreed between Tottenham and Liverpool for Robertson, but that Liverpool will only allow Robertson to leave if a replacement has been lined up.

One option that is being explored is recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma – if Liverpool can convince Roma to allow Tsimikas to return to Merseyside, that could open the door for Robertson to move to North London.
