Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is excited and confident about his team’s chances of securing a Top 8 finish in the Champions League ahead of Wednesday’s league phase finale against Copenhagen at Camp Nou.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Flick was full of praise for the new format and the jeopardy it creates ahead of the final game, and revealed the keys to guaranteeing an automatic spot in the Round of 16: keep a clean sheet and score multiple goals.
> “I love it. That’s what it’s all about. We have a great chance of finishing in the top eight. We will do everything possible to achieve this. I like the new format. We have to go step by step. We have to respect Copenhagen, who have a fantastic team. I want to play at our highest level. First, keep a clean sheet and then score goals. We’re focused on our own game, on what we have in front of us. We have a tough match against Copenhagen. We won’t make excuses, and we’re eager and confident. We’re focused on our style, on how we play. This is the Champions League, and it’s about reaching our highest level.”
Flick spoke about the need to reach “our highest level”, but Barça haven’t been anywhere near their highest level in any of their first seven matches in the Champions League so far. This is the last chance to show they are good enough to be a contender in the knockout rounds, and getting a big win that secures a Top 8 spot without any drama would send a strong message to the rest of Europe.
