BBC sources claim £42.5 midfielder prefers move to Chelsea’s rivals

It’s been a funny January for Chelsea so far. we weren’t expecting major moves, but so far all that’s happened is a couple of loans shuffled around and one youngster signed.

Despite that, the usual rumours have continued, and we continue to hear the Blues linked with top players. One potential option that emerged last week was Douglas Luiz of Juventus. The midfielder moved to Serie A in the summer of 2024 for £42.5m, but has since struggled with injury, and moved on loan to Nottingham Forest this summer – where he’s also not been playing.

Switching that loan to Chelsea has been suggested, but according to Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC, even that might not be on the cards.

“Chelsea are also interested in the Brazil international but sources have told BBC Sport his preference is Villa, where he made 204 appearances between 2019 and 2024,” Kinsella writes.

Villa are in more need of a midfielder than we are, and given his successful history there, we can see why he might make the move to the midlands instead.

Romeo Lavia returned to training this week – perhaps that will convince our bosses that we don’t need to make another move – this one looks tricky to pull off now anyway.

Chelsea’s transfer questions continue in defence too – the Blues recalled Aaron Anselmino from Dortmund, but still have apparently not decided what his future will be.

It seemed like Chelsea’s midfield depth issues were over when they signed Dario Essugo in the summer – but he’s spent even more time on the side-lines than Romeo Lavia, the man he was supposed to be helping cover for. It’s not clear what the club will do in the summer now.
