Liverpool and Tottenham have agreed a deal in principle to send club legend left back Andy Robertson to the London club for around £5M, a not insignificant fee for a 31-year-old on an expiring contract who manager Arne Slot signalled he didn’t value when he immediately benched him for new signing Milos Kerkez at the start of the 2025-26 season.
A lack of depth at the position and a general defensive depth crisis caused by injuries at centre half and right back, though, means a deal can only go ahead before the January transfer window slams shut next week if the Reds can convince Roma to terminate Kostas Tsimikas’ loan and return to Liverpool. Roma, though, won’t do that unless they can sign a replacement.
“It’s true that there is a discussion with Liverpool,” Roma sporting director Frederic Massara acknowledged this week when asked about the transfer chatter, or at least Roma’s role in the story and their current unwillingness to sign off on allowing the veteran Greek international to return to Anfield. “We’ll see how the solution evolves in the coming days.”
Tsimikas has filled a similar role at Roma this season as Robertson at Liverpool, logging around 700 minutes in 16 appearances for the Italians. Robertson has played 1,100 minutes in 22 appearances for the Reds this season. Both are seen as backups by their managers, and while not a key player, if Liverpool must replace Robertson to sell him the same applies to Tsimikas.
