Sheffield Wednesday seek deal to land ‘incredible’ Manchester City wonderkid Stephen Mfuni

Sheffield Wednesday are keen to try and do a deal to secure the loan signing of Manchester City talent, Stephen Mfuni, The Star understands.

The 17-year-old defender, who can play as a centre back of left back, has represented England at various youth levels, and most recently has been part of the Young Lions’ U19 setup.

It was reported recently that the Cityzens were open to the idea of the talented teenager heading out on loan in search of senior game time, and it’s understood that the Owls are one of the clubs that would love to have him on board.

Stephen Mfuni could leave Manchester City on loan

City have already sent one player to Hillsborough, with Jaden Heskey joining the club this month, and there have been suggestions that the progress of Harry Amass at S6 has put Wednesday in a relatively good position. Other clubs in the top-flight also like the idea of their youngster working with Henrik Pedersen, and that could aid the Owls’ pursuit. Craig Mudd’s presence as a former City coach might help, too.

"He's not just a nice guy, he's an incredible player, so it's nice to work with him," Reiss said of the defender last year. "He's very focused in training, he's listening, always concentrating. Tries to adapt to the differences between the EDS and under-18s. I'm always very happy to work with players like him."

Unfortunately for Wednesday, though, it’s not as simple as for Mfuni’s other potential suitors. They’re bound by strict rules on incomings due to their current administration, and any new arrival needs to be presented to the English Football League and given the green light before it can go ahead.

While the Owls are looking for a left-sided defender after Amass returned to Manchester United – and joined Norwich City on loan – they are also not able to offer much, if anything, in terms of wage contributions. That, of course, is something that would count against them.

There are only a few days left before the transfer window comes to a close in England, and while there’s a chance that Mfuni does move to the Championship before Monday’s deadline, any arrival at Hillsborough could be a long shot.
