Ex-Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly been told by Alvaro Arbeloa that he will be free to seek a move away from Real Madrid as soon as this summer, leading to speculation about his future - and there are some fans in the Liverpool Echo comments sections that would be open to him returning to Anfield, less than a year out from his acrimonious departure last summer.

Alexander-Arnold's £10m move to the Spanish giants hasn't gone quite as he'd hoped, with Fede Valverde and a veteran Dani Carvajal being preferred over him. Injury problems have restricted him to 11 appearances so far, one of them being a cameo in a Champions League match back at Anfield with his new team.

Reports from Spain say that new Los Blancos boss Arbeloa has told Alexander-Arnold that he is not in his plans, and he is free to move from the summer.

Arne Slot has struggled for options at right-back this season, with injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley causing him headaches. But it might be tough to imagine a return for Alexander-Arnold after the sour mood around his departure back in May 2025.

There are people who would entertain the prospect, however. On our Facebook page, reader Paul Bleazard says: "I'd take him back on loan with a potential permanent return. Of course I'm not manager, and not sure who will be next year."

Commenter Richard Lumley writes: "Someone needs to point out how many successful comebacks there have been at Liverpool FC... Robbie Fowler did, and he was better when he came back as he had something to prove. He is not the only one, is he..."

Pauline Cook says: "Bring him home. He's a game maker. One kick up the field from him and we're in front of goal, instead of what we have now. 50 passes of the ball and we might get there, but never before the bus has been parked."

Linda Page writes: "We need him, I would love him back big time. His head was turned but for all the wrong reasons. Please welcome him back."

Sagren Naidoo adds: "LFC'S current situation is partly down to the absence of Trent. No one can deliver a ball to our frontline like he could, leading to goals."

In our comments section, Dianehubbard says: "Despite how things went down last season, are we desperate enough to bring Trent back? I say yes. At least for the rest of the season."

Some aren't so keen. Jerrymyer writes: "He hasn't got Mo, Lucho, Darwin or Diogo making runs for him to pick out. His style simply wouldn't fit anymore. Same as in Madrid, he needs runners."

There are still those angry about the manner of Alexander-Arnold's departure, such as Twodogz90: "They can keep the sell-out." Pinkfloyd65 adds: "He made his bed, we don’t want him back."

Carl Sheridan says: "We never took Coutinho back when he wanted to come back, so what makes Trent so special? He made his bed."
