The uncertain future of Trent Alexander-Arnold has dominated headlines recently

Life at Real Madrid certainly hasn't panned out the way former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold hoped it would. As we near February, the 27-year-old has just 11 appearances to his name across all competitions, managing just six starts.
Injury has ravaged Alexander-Arnold's start in Spain, having suffered two muscle injuries in the space of over a month. Amid his injury issues, questions have started to be raised over whether his career at Madrid could potentially be over before it's started.
Contrasting reports in Spain have emerged with some suggesting club boss Alvaro Arbeloa has told the full-back to seek pastures new while some have reported the England star maintains the support of the Spaniard.
However, the uncertainty over his future has done little to quell the despair surrounding Anfield following their 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on the weekend. Now sixth in the Premier League table, Arne Slot's side face a very real fight for Champions League football, especially with the recent improvements of Manchester United and Chelsea.
A double-header against Newcastle United and Manchester City, sandwiched by a European clash against Qarabag, has the potential to either sink or spark the Reds' disappointing season. Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer updates from Anfield, including a former target revealing why he snubbed a move to Merseyside.
Trent Alexander-Arnold squad update
The Englishman was last in action on December 3 in a 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, where he earned his only goal contribution for his new club when assisting the first of Kylian Mbappe's brace. He lasted just 55 minutes after injuring his left quadricep.
He's since missed almost two months of action but has returned to training with hopes to finally establish himself at the Santiago Bernabeu almost eight months since securing his £10million move from Liverpool.

Madrid now travel to Portugal to take on Benfica on Wednesday in their last league phase fixture in the Champions League. Initial reports had claimed Alexander-Arnold could be sidelined for up to two months and it appears he is sill continuing to build up his fitness.
When the club announced their matchday squad for this week's clash in a fresh update on Tuesday afternoon, Alexander-Arnold was not included. While this is unlikely to hint at his longer-term status as a Real Madrid player, it does indicate the full-back is yet to prove he is ready to return to the first-team squad.
Guehi explains snub
England defender Marc Guehi was inches away from a move to Liverpool on Deadline Day but the transfer broke down. In a bitter blow to the reigning Premier League champions, Guehi secured a £30million move to Manchester City last week.
After making his debut for the Citizens in their 2-0 win over Wolves this past weekend, the 25-year-old revealed that John Stones and Phil Foden played a key role in convincing him to sign for City this month.

The move has bolstered their chances of regaining the league title while softening the blow of injuries to the likes of Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, leaving Liverpool light at the back following the defender's decision to snub the option to wait and see if Liverpool re-enter negotiations for him. Guehi said after full-time: "We've been talking for quite a while and obviously talked with different clubs.
"I felt from conversations, through talking with some of the players here, that this was the place for me to improve, to get better and just to help as much as possible. Phil and John, conversations with the manager, conversations with [director of football] Hugo [Viana], so it's been great."
