Lakers explore sneaky move that could open doors for a major trade this season

The Lakers have been reaching out during trade season, attempting to offer their unprotected 2031 or 2032 first-round pick in exchange for multiple first-round selections, which would give them more options this trade season.

With the NBA trade deadline approaching next week on February 5, there hasn't been much movement in the trade market.

Los Angeles Lakers / Schedule

One team that is usually very active is the Los Angeles Lakers, and again this season, they are expected to explore moves to maximize their chances of competing for an NBA title.

However, what is holding the Lakers back is the lack of trade assets they currently own, as the only tradable first-round picks they have are their 2031 and 2032 selections.

According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the Lakers have attempted to offer their unprotected 2031 or 2032 first-round pick in exchange for multiple first-round picks over the past month, which could potentially open the door for bigger moves in the trade market.

"In the past month, league sources told ESPN the Lakers have canvassed teams to see whether they could find a deal to send out their 2031 or 2032 first-round pick in order to get multiple firsts back for it," McMenamin reports.

"Being armed with more tradable picks would give L.A. more options this trade season, beyond the expiring contracts of Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Maxi Kleber," he adds.

With less than two weeks remaining until the trade deadline, the Lakers need to make moves now to strengthen their roster for the playoff run.

The Lakers are currently fifth in the Western Conference with a 28-17 record.
