Liverpool are reportedly planning for the future as if Xabi Alonso were already appointed as manager.
Arne Slot will leave Liverpool at the end of the season regardless of what happens between now and the end of the campaign, reports suggest.
The Dutch manager has overseen a run of form in which the Reds won four points from an available 15 in the Premier League.
While there is no doubt they are out of the league title, those missing 11 points would have put Liverpool second in the table and three points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Slot is rapidly running out of favour at Anfield and Xabi Alonso appears to be the frontrunner to become the next Liverpool manager.
Liverpool planning for future transfers as if Xabi Alonso were already the new manager
According to Fichajes, Liverpool are already planning for the future as if the Xabi Alonso’s appointment were a done deal.
The Spanish source claims that the British press widely believes the deal to be imminent.
Most strikingly, they claim that “Liverpool are already planning signings with Xabi Alonso.” Liverpool are reportedly acting in the transfer department as if Alonso’s return to Anfield was a “done deal.”
The report states: “In the Anfield offices, they are openly discussing the sporting demands of the man from Tolosa and the reinforcements he considers priorities.”
Liverpool are targeting Adam Wharton at the behest of Alonso
Liverpool just lost Marc Guehi to Manchester City but they could sign another top Crystal Palace star in Adam Wharton.
Fichajes states that Wharton “has become Liverpool’s top target to immediately strengthen their midfield.”
The 21-year-old is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League despite his age and would add tempo and composure to the Liverpool engine room if signed.
Adam Wharton to Liverpool
It remains to be seen if the rumours surrounding Alonso are true but there does seem to be a lot of belief from various outlets that the Spaniard could return to Anfield – this time as manager.
It would be an emotional and familiar reunion, but Alonso would not be walking into a perfect setup. Liverpool are lost tactically and seem to have lost the belief and drive that made them “Mentality Monsters” under Jurgen Klopp.
Similar to when Klopp arrived, Liverpool need an injection of belief and direction after what has been a meandering 2025/26 season under Slot.
