Anthony Gordon goes on the offensive against social media trolls as he speaks in Paris

Anthony Gordon was put up for media duties today in Paris, speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League match against PSG.

The Newcastle United winger appearing with Eddie Howe for the pre-match press conference.

Only Harvey Barnes has more direct goal involvements (see below) than Anthony Gordon this season in all competitions.

The former Everton winger experiencing a bit of an up and down season so far, kind of matching what has happened overall team-wise.

However, Anthony Gordon subject to some ridiculously over the top criticism from some Newcastle United fans/trolls on social media, invariably making him the scapegoat when things haven’t gone United’s way this season.

Anthony Gordon going on the offensive: “I stay off social media, it is not for me, I don’t care for people’s opinion, whether they love me, or they don’t like me, it doesn’t bother me either way. I like to just go on my own motivation, the things that motivate me daily. That comes from within for me. Everyone works differently, some people can use the social media stuff for motivation, but that’s not my style.”

Only Mbappe and Kane have scored more Champions League goals than the six Anthony Gordon has scored.

In total, the winger has eight direct goal involvements in the competition this season, two assists as well as the six goals.

In other competitions it is only three goals and two assists so far this season.

Asked about the different returns, Anthony Gordon: “I don’t have an answer for you, unfortunately. It is just one of those things…I am trying the exact same in all games and trying to do the right things always, they are just going in, in the Champions League.”

The Newcastle United player accepts that there are now more expectations on him.

With how the season has gone so far overall for him, Anthony Gordon saying: “I think perception sometimes can distort reality a little bit. I think people’s expectations of me have grown and rightly so, I am completely fine with that, but I know I am doing the right things every day. Whether I’m flying, whether I’m not playing so well, I try and just give my best. The result is sometimes kind of out of my hands. I’m also playing against right backs who are elite themselves. So I know people expect a lot from me but they are also quite good players themselves, they get paid quite well to stop me.”

Newcastle United are playing every weekend and midweek in the four competitions.

Anthony Gordon explaining the challenge for himself and his teammates: “We are always trying to do the right things, no matter the competition. It is hard really to look at what competition we are playing in, because the games come so thick and fast, we just try and do the right things. That is what I try and do individually as well. You just give it your best, that is all we can do as a team.”

Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League twice in three years.

Now they are one win away from automatic qualification to the last 16, at worst, United will have a play-off chance to get through.

Anthony Gordon stating: “I do love the Champions League, I think brings out extra in players, it is the biggest competition in the world, for me it is the best. Every player grows up wanting to play in this competition, so I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bring out some extra motivation or adrenaline. You are facing the European champions, like we are tomorrow, you’re playing all the best players, the best managers…it is just the biggest and the best.”
