Liverpool now have less than a week to complete any last-minute deals in the January transfer window. While Arne Slot had downplayed the need for major signings, recent setbacks – including dropping out of the Premier League’s top four and a fresh defensive injury concern – may increase the case for reinforcing at centre-back.
“Yeah, that’s what I expect,” Slot responded when asked whether his squad will remain as it is. “But, as I always say, if there’s an opportunity in the market, or if we think we can strengthen the squad, then this club will always try to do so, but at this moment in time, I expect it to stay mainly the same.”
The Reds have already signed Ifeanyi Ndukwe and El Hadji Mor Talla Ndiaye, though both are expected to join Liverpool’s under-21 squad rather than the first team.
Andy Robertson’s future remains a key talking point. The left-back has attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, with discussions taking place, but his contract runs until the end of the season. Despite the speculation, Robertson now looks set to stay at Anfield.
According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, young midfielder Trey Nyoni is set to remain at Liverpool for the rest of the season despite interest from clubs across Europe in a potential loan move.
Nyoni has racked up just five appearances across all competitions this season and has been an unused substitute 16 times. The Premier League champions intend for him to stay close to the first-team squad while remaining eligible for youth sides, and he could captain the U19s in their UEFA Youth League round-of-32 clash with MSK Zilina.
Other youngsters, including Trent Kone-Doherty, Amara Nallo, and Kieran Morrison, could still be loaned out depending on the offers received. Liverpool’s decision to retain Nyoni reflects the squad’s current lack of depth, further compounded by long-term injuries to Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni
