'I found a home in Portland': Deni Avdija gets candid on his Washington return

The Israeli star fondly reflected about meeting the Wizards again and returning to D.C. as a much-improved rising star.

Facing the Wizards in Washington just for the second time around on Tuesday, Deni Avdija admitted that there are no emotional or sentimental vibes around him anymore.

Portland Trail Blazers / Schedule

That's simply because he already fully embraced Portland as his home, and the Trail Blazers as his brand-new team to lead.

"I feel like I’m more chill," he said in the postgame of the Blazers' 115-111 loss against the Wizards. "I feel like the first time you come back here, it was a little emotional, but I feel like I found a home in Portland. I’m used to it.

"DC is definitely a nice memory to have, but it doesn’t change the way I play or the way I approach the game. I approach the games similar in every arena."

In his return after a two-game absence due to a back injury, Avdija went off with 17 points in 6-14 shooting with 12 boards and three assists.

Unfortunately, he and the Blazers settled for their third consecutive loss.

As much as he might want to prove a point following his trade departure in 2024 and the recent viral remarks of team president Michael Winger that they don't regret trading him, Avdija simply accepts the fact that the Wizards made the best possible choice of their own.

"A lot has changed," said Avdija about seeing his former team on the other side of the court. "They went that route of rebuilding and they have young and talented players. I’m happy for them and I hope they do well

"But yeah, nothing much more than that."

Still, joining Portland is undeniably a blessing in disguise for Avdija in taking the next step of his promising career.

As he became a Blazer, Avdija is finally fulfilling his massive potential. He is projected to claim the first All-Star nod. And by averaging 25.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists, he is also an early favorite for the 2025-26 Most Improved Player award.

In the end, Avdija has no reason to look back anymore in his old Wizards days, as his present and future are definitely bright with the up-and-coming Blazers squad.

"I feel like the maturity, the confidence, believing in my game more," Avdija noted about his changes since leaving D.C. "I’ll be honest—the Blazers have found a way to use me that is very effective.

"I found a home, the fans, the city, the team are embracing me, and the only thing I can do is thrive. So yeah, there’s a lot more to come."
