Liverpool are pushing for a top four finish this Premier League season, with their title hopes now over

Liverpool’s latest Premier League defeat to Bournemouth has put pressure on both the players and Arne Slot as they slip out of the top four.

With their hopes of retaining their title dead and buried, pushing for a top four finish is the priority for the Reds now. They are currently sixth in the table with 36 points, a significant way off where they were this time last year.

While a top four finish will be disappointing for those who had expected back-to-back title challenges, a top four finish will still be respectable considering how inconsistent the champions have been.

How many points do Liverpool need to secure top four?

We’ve taken a look at what Liverpool need to make sure they finish inside the top four at the end of the season, based on Opta predictions and points average over the last ten years.

Liverpool have finished inside the top four in eight of the last ten Premier League seasons, including their title win in 2019/20. Taking into account every fourth-placed team from the 2015/16 season up until Liverpool’s latest trophy-winning campaign, the average points earned was 70.

This means, based on that average, Liverpool should be aiming to pick up an extra 34 points from their remaining games. This boils down to earning an average of 2.2 points per game for the 15 matches still to play.

It’s certainly doable for the Reds, especially if they can spark a winning streak. However, they are yet to register their first league win of 2026.

Liverpool Premier League predicted finish

After their defeat to Bournemouth, Opta have bumped Liverpool’s prediction down the table. They have now been tipped to finish fifth with an average of 61.57 points, just behind Chelsea on 61.64.

These predicted tables can change dramatically between now and the end of the season, though. Also, taking into account Opta’s forecasted table, Liverpool may only require 62 points, rather than the 70 quoted by working out the last ten seasons’ average.

This would mean the Reds require 26 points from the remaining 15 games, which works out at 1.7 per game.
