Sheffield Wednesday keen to secure loan signing of exciting Manchester City prodigy - report

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly keen on landing Stephen Mfuni on loan from Manchester City.

Comfortable at centre-back or left-back, Mfuni is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young talents.

He is just 17 but has already tasted senior football and recently featured in Manchester City’s 10-1 FA Cup rout of Exeter City.

The defender is also making waves on the international scene and at just 17, is already a regular for England Under-19s.

Wednesday have an incredibly thin squad that is in danger of being gutted further before the window closes on February 2.

They have lost Manchester United’s Harry Amass following the conclusion of his loan spell and subsequent move to Norwich City, leaving the Owls light at left-back.

Mfuni would be able to plug the gap created by Amass’ exit and would also be capable of providing cover in the heart of defence.

However, Wednesday are having to work under strict transfer constraints as a consequence of their administration. Any loan deal they strike will have to be given EFL approval and Manchester City may have to cover key finances involved.

That being said, the Premier League giants have shown a willingness to do business with the struggling Owls having loaned Jaden Heskey to S6 earlier this month.

Sheffield Wednesday’s plight

After one win in 28 games and damaging point deductions, Wednesday are on their way back to League One. While survival may not be on the cards, it is crucial the squad continue to put up a fight for weary supporters.

Mfuni would arguably add some much-needed solidity and his ball-playing style could make him an ideal fit for Henrik Pedersen’s squad.

It remains to be seen whether Wednesday’s defence will be weakened further, with Yan Valery and Max Lowe both having been the subject of transfer speculation.
