Newcastle United suffer major blow ahead of Liverpool - and are sweating on another key star

Newcastle United injury news ahead of the Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

Newcastle United have suffered an injury blow to a key player ahead of their trip to Liverpool.

The Reds host the Magpies at Anfield on Saturday, with both sides struggling to build momentum this season. Despite being Premier League champions, Liverpool’s title defence has been meek and they sit sixth in the table after a 3-2 defeat by AFC Bournemouth last weekend.

Arne Slot has come under pressure as head coach from sections of supporters and there is a battle to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Newcastle fans have also been underwhelmed by what they have witnessed so far this term. Eddie Howe’s men are ninth in the Premier League, having lost 2-0 at the hands of Aston Vila last time out. The Magpies are also hoping that they can secure Champions League football for a third time in four years.

A victory for Newcastle at Anfield would indeed bolster their ambitions. The Magpies have not won on Liverpool’s patch since 1994 and that’s a record they will be desperate to end.

But Howe will not be able to deploy Joelinton in his midfield. The Brazil international sustained a hamstring injury in the Villa defeat and has been ruled out of action. Joelinton has started 17 of Newcastle’s 22 Premier League matches this season and has scored five goals in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, manager Howe said: “Joe won’t make the game, he has had a scan, we don’t think it is a bad injury. But we think he will be out for a few weeks. He will miss a few games.”

Meanwhile, Bruno Guimaraes faces a late fitness test ahead of facing PSG. He has travelled to the French capital but has been troubled by an ankle issue. Howe said: “Our other Brazilian, Bruno, is with us, and we will know more in the next few hours.”

Newcastle will definitely be without versatile full-back Tino Livramento (hamstring), Fabian Schar (ankle) and Emil Krath (knee) against Liverpool. In addition, Jacob Murphy (hamstring) has missed the Magpies’ past three matches and remains doubtful. Dan Burn (punctured lung and broken ribs) made a return to Howe’s squad against Villa, as well as Will Osula (ankle).
