"Would be a difficult one to sell to the fans" - Pundit details why Liverpool should stay away from move for Trent Alexander-Arnold

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has urged Liverpool not to consider re-signing Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid. He believes it will be difficult to get fans on board with the signing because of how he left the club.

Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid in June 2025, a month before his Anfield contract expired, as they wanted him to play at the FIFA World Cup. The Englishman has been dealing with injury issues this season, and recent reports suggested that new manager Alvaro Arbeloa has told the former Liverpool star that he has no future at the club.

Speaking to BestBettingSites, Murphy warned Liverpool that not many players return to their former clubs and do well. He said that the club must not think about bringing him back, as it would be a step back in their process of evolving the team, and said:

"I think that would be a difficult one to sell to the fans. Also, not many players go back to a former club and succeed. The succession plan has to be about moving forward and evolving the team. So no, I don’t think that would work.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to make the matchday squad in the next two weeks as he is close to rejoining full training. Meanwhile, the Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong as the replacement, while Conor Bradley has also been given more minutes this season.

Danny Murphy thinks Liverpool star is leaving this summer

Danny Murphy believes Mohamed Salah will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. He said that it would be a surprise if they continued beyond the summer, given what has happened, and said:

"I think so, yeah. I know he’s contracted longer, but with what’s gone on, how the team’s performed and how he’s performed, I think it would surprise most people if he stayed for another year. The only caveat would be if a new manager came in and really wanted to build a team around him, try to get one more year out of him and have that conversation. I don’t know Mo Salah personally, but maybe he’d be given a new impetus, a new lease of life, with a different manager."

Mohamed Salah hit out at Liverpool and Arne Slot in December when he was benched by the manager. He claimed they were throwing him under the bus for the club's poor form and were pushing him to leave.
