Jeremy Jacquet transfer “under consideration” for Liverpool

Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet is “under consideration” for Liverpool as the need for reinforcements has been exacerbated in light of recent absences.

Jeremy Jacquet Transfer News & Updates

Transfer interest: Liverpool considering 20-year-old Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, reportedly competing with Chelsea and Bayern Munich for his signature.

The detail: The 6’2″ centre-back is valued at approximately £50m–£60m, still only 20 but regarded as having the physicality to compete in Premier League.

Next step: The player reportedly prefers a move to Chelsea, but Rennes are seeking a deal that will only see the centre-back move in the summer.

Earlier this week, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported Liverpool are “in the race” for the 20-year-old alongside Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

It came after the *Mail*‘s Lewis Steele stated the club are “keeping an eye from afar,” and now the latest from the *Times*‘ Paul Joyce is that Jacquet is “under consideration.”

Liverpool’s needs are clear to everyone in world football, with no breakthrough in Ibrahima Konate‘s contract talks, Joe Gomez‘s ongoing injury troubles and Giovanni Leoni‘s long-term absence.

Rennes are reportedly seeking a club record fee around €65-70 million (£56.4-£60.7m), but prefer to agree a deal that will see the defender leave in the summer, and not the January window.

Sky Sports claim the 20-year-old “has expressed a preference for joining Chelsea despite interest from other clubs,” with talks said to be ongoing.

And Romano has since claimed “Chelsea and Liverpool would love to do the business now,” but Rennes remain insistent that any deal would be for the summer.

Could Jeremy Jacquet adapt to the Premier League?

Jacquet, 6’2″, would represent an investment in a young and emerging centre-back, which has been the focus of recent deals for Liverpool.

The club have signed 17-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Mor Talla Ndiaye, 18, and Noah Adekoya, 19, to their academy ranks. However, Jacquet would be an immediate first-team signing.

The Frenchman has played 54 games in top-flight football so far and is well-regarded for his defensive positioning and ability in aerial duels, key traits needed at Liverpool.

He is a right-footed centre-back who operates on the right of the central pairing, but has played across the back three throughout his time at Rennes.

His physical characteristics suggest he can adapt to the Premier League, but he still remains in the development phase of his career, and that is something Liverpool would be aware of.

Since Konate’s arrival in 2021, the club have only invested in Leoni as a first-team option at centre-back and a pivotal summer lies ahead to consolidate the position’s future.

Chelsea are widely viewed as leading the race for Jacquet, but if Liverpool’s interest is serious, they cannot sit idle and allow another potential target to join a Premier League rival.
