The race for promotion from League Two is intensifying as clubs across England’s fourth tier jostle for position with just four months of the season remaining. Salford City, owned by Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville alongside a consortium, are pushing for promotion with the side currently sitting in fourth place in the division.
Since the famous ‘Class of ’92’ – Beckham, Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville – took over the club in 2014, Salford have experienced a meteoric rise through the English football pyramid. Four promotions in five seasons propelled them from the eighth tier into League Two by 2019, transforming a modest semi-professional outfit into a professional Football League club with genuine ambitions of climbing further.
As part of their push for promotion, Salford have now secured the services of a familiar name to Reds fans – former Liverpool and Sunderland striker Fabio Borini, who has extended his stay at the Peninsula Stadium until the end of the 2025-26 season.
The 34-year-old Italian originally joined Salford back in October 2024 on a short-term deal after training with the club for several weeks as a free agent following his departure from Serie B side Sampdoria. Borini had been participating in a pre-season training camp organised by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) for out-of-contract players during the summer, which also featured former Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison.
Salford manager Karl Robinson allowed Borini to use the club’s facilities to maintain his fitness during that transitional period, and the experienced forward impressed sufficiently to earn an initial three-month contract that was set to expire in January 2026. That agreement has now been extended until the end of the season, providing Robinson with additional attacking depth as Salford enter the business end of their campaign.
“It’s been great,” Borini said upon initially joining Salford in October. “I came in to train to keep myself fit in this transition between contracts and Salford, the gaffer and Alex Bruce were kind enough to allow me to use the facilities and train here”. He added: “I can lead by example in training and beyond. While I’ve never played in League Two, I’m eager to learn from my teammates about the league’s key characteristics”.
