What Manchester City sources are now saying about signing Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool exit - journalist

Trent Alexander-Arnold has endured a mixed spell since he decided to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold departed Anfield after two decades on the books of his boyhood team.

The move obviously didn’t go down too well with the Reds faithful, who have made their feelings very clear.

Liverpool fans booed Trent earlier this season when they met Real Madrid in a Champions League fixture.

The right-back only played nine minutes of that clash, and due to a combination of injury issues and competition for places, has struggled to cement himself as a regular starter for Los Blancos.

Now, with the January transfer window open, there has been a suggestion that Alexander-Arnold could join Manchester City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joining Manchester City played down

City and Liverpool have developed a rivalry in recent years, with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola pushing each other to the limit in the race for the league title.

So, one of their former academy players moving to the Etihad Stadium probably wouldn’t go down too well with the Reds faithful.

But the information provided by journalist Alex Crook on the Transfer Insiders podcast this week suggests a potential transfer is being played down.

He said: “It certainly wouldn’t do much to patch up that relationship between him [Trent] and the Liverpool supporters.

“I did speak to people at Manchester City when this story came out, and it was played down to me. That’s not saying it definitely won’t happen, because actually I think he’d be a great signing for Manchester City, bringing him in.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold Real Madrid stats vs Liverpool

The Englishman provided his first assist for Real Madrid in a La Liga meeting against Athletic Club on December 3, 2025.

However, in his remaining 10 appearances for the Spanish giants, Alexander-Arnold has failed to provide a single goal contribution.

It’s not an ideal situation for the full-back to be in, especially now we are in a World Cup year.

Trent provided 14 goal contributions for Liverpool last season en route to the Premier League title, and ended his Reds career with an impressive 92 assists.

A move away from Spain may well be what is needed for the full-back to rediscover that type of form, but fans are surely hoping he does not end up at Man City.
