"We can confirm": Report states that"sensational return"for Liverpool hero is"genuine possibility"

Liverpool could reportedly hire Steven Gerrard as a caretaker manager if they fire Arne Slot amid the Dutchman’s worrying performance this season.

Last season, Slot defied the odds by winning the Premier League title in his first year in the role.

This year, however, Liverpool are worryingly poor tactically while there is a lack of direction in their play.

After the gutting 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, the mood around Slot’s future has changed significantly. The patience that previously existed among supporters is wearing thin.

Liverpool hiring Steven Gerrard to replace Arne Slot is a “genuine possibility”

Liverpool have “initiated contact” with Xabi Alonso over the possibility of replacing Arne Slot but there is also a “genuine possibility” that Steven Gerrard could make a sensational return to Anfield, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

The 45-year-old has been fair but critical of Slot recently but it now seems as though a future without the Dutch manager is being prepared for.

TEAMtalk published a report todaying stating: “Club sources indicate that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners, are increasingly open to a managerial change come the summer.

“Informal contacts have already been made with Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder who recently parted ways with Real Madrid.

“But amid the uncertainty, club legend Gerrard has emerged as a potential stop-gap solution. The former captain, currently available after his stint managing in the Saudi Pro League, has informed Liverpool’s hierarchy that he is prepared to step in on an interim basis should Slot’s tenure end prematurely in the coming weeks.”

Could Gerrard make a Michael Carrick-esque impact on Liverpool?

Michael Carrick, a peer of Gerrard’s during the early Premier League days, has made a tangible impact on Manchester United since replacing Ruben Amorim in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Gerrard has recently been critical of Slot, stating that the current Liverpool situation is unacceptable. The Scouser told the current Liverpool boss to stop complaining and work on solutions instead.

“He needs to stop mentioning low blocks,” Gerrard told TNT Sports. “Low blocks have been happening against Liverpool since I was playing. That’s just the way it is.”

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Saturday Night Football trip to Bournemouth, Slot replied at the request of a reporter, saying: “I haven’t heard him saying it exactly. But Steven Gerrard has always been very positive – and still is – about Liverpool Football Club. He cares so much about it.”

It would be cool to see Gerrard as the manager of Liverpool if FSG move ahead with rumoured plans to remove Slot from the dugout until a permanent replacement is hired in the summer.

Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked with the Liverpool manager role but is reportedly unwilling to accept work until the season is over after being let go by Real Madrid.
