Liverpool are in "active talks" to complete the signing of "unique" star - Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool are in “active talks” with Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet over a move to the club this summer, according to a new update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds badly need to sign a new central defender at the end of the season, if not two, given the lack of options that may potentially be there at that point.

Ibrahima Konate is yet to sign a new deal and is out of contract in the summer, while there is also no guarantee that Joe Gomez will remain at Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk will be 35 years of age by the time next season gets underway, and Giovanni Leoni is still a young defender who will be returning from a serious knee injury.

According to Romano on X, Liverpool are in talks with highly-rated Rennes ace Jacquet over a summer switch to the Premier League champions, but there is stiff competition for his signature:

“The race to sign Jeremy Jacquet ahead of summer transfer window, still ongoing. Chelsea, Liverpool and FC Bayern are all in active talks as revealed. Trying get the deal done now for next season 2026/27. Negotiations ongoing.”

Jacquet a fantastic summer option for Liverpool

Jacquet is a centre-back with so much quality and potential, so the idea of him in a Liverpool shirt next season is a mouthwatering prospect.

The 20-year-old has already racked up 30 appearances for Rennes, as well as winning a total of 31 caps for France at youth team level, and content creator Antonio Mango has lauded him in the past, saying:

“Physicality, pace, athleticism and technical ability. True combination of unique elements. Whoever signs him is getting a monster.“

As mentioned, centre-back has to be seen as a priority position for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, and ideally, a couple of signings will be made in that area of the pitch.

Jacquet could be the outstanding young prospect with long-term potential, with a slightly more experienced head also coming in – someone who can be a regular starter from the off.

The Rennes star can be a key figure in no time, however, and if Konate does move on, he could prove to be a fantastic replacement at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
