The final stretch of the January transfer window is upon us, with clubs across England scrambling to finalize loan deals and permanent signings before the deadline slams shut on Sunday, February 2nd at 11pm. Premier League and Championship sides alike are working around the clock to strengthen their squads, offload fringe players, or – in Liverpool’s case – secure development opportunities for promising academy talents who need regular first-team football.
Liverpool have been particularly active in managing their loan army during this window, recalling several youngsters from underwhelming spells and seeking fresh destinations where meaningful minutes can be guaranteed. Harvey Elliott remains stranded at Aston Villa after being frozen out by Unai Emery, while James McConnell’s Ajax loan has proved equally frustrating. Now, another Reds prospect is on the verge of a fresh start.
Lewis Koumas is expected to undergo a medical at Hull City today as the Championship promotion-chasers look to complete a loan deal for the 20-year-old Wales international before the deadline. According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Koumas is set to have his medical examination at the KCOM Stadium as Hull move quickly to secure his services for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
The move comes after Liverpool terminated Koumas’ loan spell at Birmingham City last week, bringing him back to Anfield following a disappointing first half of the campaign in the Midlands. Koumas made 25 appearances in all competitions for Birmingham but started just seven Championship matches, accumulating only 771 minutes of playing time.
Hull currently sit fourth in the Championship table under manager Sergej Jakirović, just five points behind second-placed Middlesbrough with a game in hand and are firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Koumas will no doubt eager to secure regular playing time as he aims to cement his place in Craig Bellamy’s Wales squad ahead of a potential World Cup this summer, contingent on Wales advancing through the playoffs. The forward has earned nine senior caps for his country and scored his first goal for Wales in a victory over Liechtenstein.
