With just a week left of the January transfer window, several Premier League clubs are stepping up their spending. Manchester City and Tottenham have already invested heavily, while Chelsea remain active as ever.

The Blues are targeting a new centre-back, with Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet on their radar, though Liverpool are also monitoring the Frenchman. Chelsea must also decide on the future of Cole Palmer amid continued links to Manchester United.

Arsenal, despite leading the table, have so far stayed quiet in the market, though that could change soon. Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling, who previously featured for Liverpool, has also returned to the headlines.

Sterling has left the Blues by mutual agreement, ending his three-and-a-half-year spell at the club after joining from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, the club have confirmed.

The England international made 81 appearances for Chelsea. He spent last season on loan at Arsenal and has not featured for the Blues since May 2024, training away from the first team since returning last summer.

Sterling was linked with clubs including Fulham and Napoli but was only open to a permanent move. With his contract – previously set to run for another 18 months – now terminated, he is free to join a new club without needing a deal to be completed before Monday’s transfer deadline.

A club statement read: “Raheem Sterling has today departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing to an end three-and-a-half seasons as our player, having signed in the summer of 2022 when he was transferred from Manchester City. We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career.”

Raheem Sterling was hailed as one of England’s brightest talents when he joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers in February 2010. The winger quickly became a first-team regular under former boss Brendan Rodgers and earned his first England cap in November 2012 at just 17, becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever international.

He made his senior debut as a substitute in a 2-1 league loss to Wigan Athletic on March 24, 2012, and his first start came against Manchester City on August 26, 2012. Sterling’s rise continued, and he reached his 100th appearance for Liverpool in December 2014. His time at Anfield ended controversially in July 2015 when he moved to Manchester City.
