Xabi Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid sent shockwaves across European football, prompting several elite clubs to position themselves for a potential move ahead of next season.

Liverpool are among the leading contenders, a link strengthened by Alonso’s strong ties to Anfield and the club’s inconsistent campaign. With the Reds no longer in the title race, Champions League qualification is now viewed as the minimum requirement.

Failure to secure that could place Arne Slot’s future under serious scrutiny, with Alonso emerging as a leading candidate to succeed him. Since retiring as a player, Alonso has built an outstanding coaching reputation.

His spell at Bayer Leverkusen was historic, ending Bayern Munich’s dominance and delivering the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title. Across 140 matches, he recorded 89 wins, 32 draws and just 19 defeats, while also lifting the German Cup and Super Cup and reaching the Europa League final.

Liverpool’s board have already made initial contact to assess Alonso’s availability, with the Spaniard responding positively. With doubts growing internally over Slot’s long-term suitability, a managerial change is becoming an increasingly realistic possibility.

Arne Slot was recently asked about Alonso’s potential interest in the Liverpool job, to which he responded with a touch of humour. Slot said: “Yes, he called me and said: ‘What do you think about the team because I am going to take over in six months, can you tell me a little bit more?’”

“Or maybe earlier. Maybe he takes over tomorrow! No, no, no. This is one of the weirdest questions I ever got. What is there it say? I am working here for a little bit more than one and a half years and I really like my work over here.

“We won the league last season, struggled more in the league this season. That is also obvious, so yes what is there left to say?” Foot Mercato journalist Sebastien Denis has provided a cryptic update on Xabi Alonso’s future. He posted on X: “Xabi Alonso🔴🔴⏳”
