Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly heard Anfield sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ countless times – and East Kilbride Hiking Club adopted that mantra as they visited his birthplace.

Members visited the Muirkirk area, south of Strathaven, on their latest walk.

A large group of 22 set off from Kames, Muirkirk, on a 15km circular walk along a long-abandoned former Caledonian Railways track to the former Glenbuck mining village.

The River Ayr Way is a waymarked trail that passes close to the ‘lost village’. Yet it lives on as a heritage village featuring a memorial to its famous son Shankly and its ‘Cherries’, the team that proved a nursery for a plethora of professional footballers.

Meanwhile an even larger group of 28 high-level hikers walked or waded through Douglas Water on the climb up to Cairn Table (593m), which afforded splendid views of Muirkirk as the hikers lunched. The hill is notable for two cairns, one being a WW1 memorial while the other possibly holds remains of pre-historic people buried under the stones.

Check out the club website at www.ekhikingclub.co.uk to see where else they have been walking recently and where they will be going to next. May is looking forward to providing you with all the information you need to join this group on the hills; just phone or message her on 07981 307803.
