In August 2025, roughly six months ago, Tyler Morton left Liverpool for £15m. The young midfielder was snapped up by French giants Lyon, having struggled to make a huge impact at Anfield.
He joined the Reds when he was just seven years old, but played only 14 times for the senior team and didn't appear to have the trust of manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman offered him just five appearances during their season working together, totalling a meek 263 minutes of game time.
In France, however, Morton has quickly set about establishing himself as a first-team regular. As of late January 2026, he has 26 appearances for Lyon. But how is he getting on?
Morton's Brilliant Start at Lyon

Morton wasted no time upon his arrival, as he started the first four Ligue 1 games of the season, before picking up a red card. Despite that early dismissal, the French media were quickly impressed by what they saw.
Writing in August, just weeks after Morton's arrival, French journalist Matt Spiro could not help but praise the Englishman's immediate impact for Lyon. He explained:
"Last weekend, Tyler Morton turned in an exceptional display on his home debut for Lyon, the €10m signing from Liverpool catching the eye with his presence in front of the defence, his tireless running and incisive passing. Morton, who made just two Premier League appearances for the Reds, had the Lyon fans on their feet when his sensational pass for Ainsley Maitland-Miles split the Metz defence on 30 minutes."
He added: "The ex-Arsenal man [Maitland-Miles] played well in the 3-0 romp, but it was Morton’s masterful midfield display that made the headines."
Morton has kept his spot in the team throughout his first season with Lyon, and has started all 17 Ligue 1 games in which he has featured – only missing out on two fixtures due to suspensions. He has two goals and two assists in the league and tends to be trusted as one of the central midfielders in a double pivot role
How Morton Has Perfromed More Recently
After a brilliant start to life in France, Morton's influence on the team has faded a little. Get French Football News (GFFN) recently gave the midfielder a mild 5/10 rating in the 1-0 away win against Young Boys in the Europa League.
GFFN were, however, more impressed with his efforts in another January fixture, when he helped Lyon beat Lille 2-1 in the Coupe de France Round of 16. Journalist Bastien Cheval explained:
"The former Liverpool midfielder is not as influential as he was during the first part of the campaign, but he remains a vital cog in the engine room thanks to his passing quality."

After a slight drop off, it looks as though the 23-year-old is once more building up a head of momntum for the second half of the season. In his most recent Ligue 1 outing, he scored and, according to L'Equipe, also 'ran the game' as Lyon beat Metz 5-2.
The French outlet claimed that he 'orchestrated' things even though Endrick stole headlines with his hat-trick. The English midfielder is said to have 'pulled the strings' as he scored with a 'crisp strike' at goal, while also picking up an assist.
Amid his fine debut season, there are claims that the 'English prodigy is already being targeted by several major European clubs'. This comes from GFFN, who note that he is 'widely regarded in France as one of the most complete midfielders in the league', praising his technical ability and vision, while also acknowledging his defensive work rate.
