Lakers get bad news on trading for Pelicans' Herb Jones before deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers need a versatile wing like Herb Jones more than they realize.

Acquiring the 6-foot-7 New Orleans Pelicans two-way stud would improve the franchise’s odds of transforming into a dynamic Western Conference force on both ends.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be in the cards for the Lakers this season.

"The market for such wings who can shoot from distance and defend remains quite limited, with New Orleans still resistant to trade interest in both Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III," the Stein Line’s Marc Stein reported Monday.

“It’s believed that the Lakers are only going to sacrifice their projected financial flexibility in the summer — which is expected to furnish them with the ability to make significant roster changes — if they can acquire a real needle-mover at the position.”

Stein’s report isn’t much of a shocker, to be frank, considering the Pelicans previously stated that they are thrilled by the idea of relinquishing Jones. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s devastating news for a Lakers squad that remains interested in the 27-year-old forward.

Jones is the epitome of a well-rounded role player, as his impressive situational awareness, instincts, and high motor make him an asset worth trading for.

The Alabama product is averaging 9.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals with the Pelicans this season.

At the end of the day, Stein’s report confirms that acquiring Jones wasn’t meant to be for the Lakers.
