Champions League Wrap: Benfica keeper nets crucial 98th minute goal as Arsenal make it eight…

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin headed his team into the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League with a goal eight minutes into injury time in their 4-2 home win over Real Madrid.

José Mourinho’s side needed that late late goal to stay in the competition and the result means that Real Madrid dropped out of the top eight and as the ninth best team in the league phase they must now play in the knockout phase play-off round.

Kylian Mbappe scored a brace for Madrid as Andreas Schjelderup scored twice while Vangelis Pavlidis converted a penalty for the home side to make it 3-2.

Trubin rose highest to meet Fredrik Aursnes' centre to earn the 4-2 win and secure the 24th and last spot in the knockout phase at the end of a dramatic night of action with 18 games in the Champions League.

The top eight teams were confirmed as Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting and Manchester City all get a bye to the last 16.

Arsenal finished top of the league phase after making it eight wins from eight.

Meanwhile Olympique Marseille, PSV, Napoli, Ajax and Villarreal all saw their Champions League campaigns end.
