The Milwaukee Bucks are fielding all offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo on the trade block since this is a rare instance of a multi-time MVP being available. Teams like the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat have expressed strong interest. However, one other contender previously rumored to want Giannis no longer appears to be a realistic option.
Tim MacMahon shared the following on his ESPN podcast:
“I have been told by folks with the Spurs that we are not a home for Giannis. There’s been a lot of smoke around that going back to last summer, but everything in San Antonio is about the Wemby timeline. And this is a decade past the Wemby timeline when you bring in Giannis at his age. I do not think the Spurs are a bidder.”
Last summer and earlier this season featured reports placing the San Antonio Spurs in rumors due to their many assets. San Antonio could realistically have a great chance at trading for Antetokounmpo due to their young roster and future draft picks available to trade. However, it appears that the Spurs would rather invest in their youth over trading a lot for a second superstar.
Spurs Don’t Want Giannis Joining Wemby
One reason that many pundits tried to forecast a Giannis trade to San Antonio would be to pair him with Victor Wembanyama as a superstar duo. No other team would have a stronger duo at the top of the roster with both players able to dominate on both sides of the court.
An argument can be made that Wembanyama and Antetokounmpo are the two best defenders in the league when 100% healthy. However, the Spurs feel that they may fall into the same issue as other teams by trying to stack their odds of contending a bit too soon when they’re already a top tier team in the regular season standings.
Young talents like Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle are valued highly by San Antonio, especially since they would hold cheaper salaries as rotation players on rookie deals. Milwaukee would want one or both of those assets, along with a boatload of draft picks in exchange for Giannis.
Spurs Could Change Mind About Giannis
The current report is more so about the upcoming trade deadline and San Antonio clearly not wanting to mess with a roster that has developed impressive chemistry. An early elimination in the loaded Western Conference could see the Spurs active on the market in the summer.
Milwaukee is expected to pass on trading Antetokounmpo this season if they don’t feel the trade deadline offers provide their desired return. The offseason sees more teams looking to make big moves after disappointing playoff exits changes timelines and some organizations get more desperate.
For now, San Antonio is content playing with their current roster and seeing if they can contend for an NBA Championship this season. Giannis and other big names on the trade market could easily enter the equation for the Spurs if they feel moves are needed to contend next season.
