In his latest report, NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed that the Celtics superstar is thinking about potentially postponing his basketball comeback this year.
Tatum is yet to reveal his final decision.
“It is up in the air on if he’s going to return at all this season,” Haynes said. “I was told there were a couple of factors of why he’s reached that point. But as of right now, that changes the whole landscape because Tatum even told me personally he was returning at some point.
"I was hearing he was getting close, and league sources told me that the situation has changed.”
The Boston forward has taken an aggressive approach in his ongoing rehab, and many are compelled by his promising progress.
But in a recent podcast appearance, Tatum went viral for noting that he "contemplates" playing this season out of the Celtics' unforeseen success without him. The Celtics overachieved with a 29-18 record as the current No. 2 team in the East behind the lead of Jaylen Brown.
"That's something I contemplate every day," Tatum said. "More so about the team, if or when I do come back this season, they would've played 50 some-odd games without me. So they have an identity this year or things that they felt have clicked for them, and it's been successful, right, third or second team in the East up to this point.
"So there is a thought in my head that's like, how does that work or hows does that look with me integrating myself off an injury and 50-60 games into a season?"
Whatever his decision, the Celtics will continue to support Tatum. But as it is, Boston is playing well, and his potential comeback might ruin the team's flourishing flow and chemistry.
