Raheem Sterling has left Chelsea with his contract terminated by mutual respect.
The former England winger had been frozen out at Stamford Bridge, and, under Enzo Maresca, becoming part of the “bomb squad” forced to train alone and apart from the rest of the first-team loan.
He spent last season on loan at Arsenal but failed to impress during his time at the Emirates, although Mikel Arteta did praise his dressing room influence on younger players.
The highest-paid player on Chelsea’s books on a reported £325,000 a week, the club had found it hard to shift him, partly because of his wages, and also because of his expressed desire to remain in the London area because of family reasons.
However, now a solution has been found, whereby Chelsea will pay off some of his remaining contract and allow him to leave the club as a free agent.
He can no try and find another club, whilst Chelsea will be happy to draw a veil over this drama.
