Zach Lowe imagines Giannis Antetokounmpo to Paolo Banchero swap

A blockbuster trade scenario linking Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Orlando Magic emerged this week after NBA analyst Zach Lowe proposed the idea on the latest episode of The Zach Lowe Show.

Lowe proposed a hypothetical deal that would send Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Magic in return for Paolo Banchero plus a handful of additional pieces. The scenario immediately sparked interest, given the star power of both players and the significant long-term ramifications for each team.

“My favorite fake trade for Giannis is Paolo Banchero plus whatever they have left over, which ain’t much, I think you could trade one first round pick, plus something else for Giannis. Because you need a player that’s going to help you win now,” Lowe commented in his show.

Lowe noted that he has been considering the concept since the start of the season, presenting it as a win-now option for the Bucks if the franchise ultimately decides to shift toward rebuilding around younger talent.

In his fourth NBA season, the 23-year-old Paolo Banchero continues to anchor the Magic’s long-term plans. He’s averaging 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 29.1% from three in 35 contests, logging 34.1 minutes per night.

Banchero is set to earn around $41.5 million this season after signing a five-year, $239 million maximum rookie extension, which could rise to $287 million if he earns All-NBA honors. The deal also includes a player option for the 2030-31 season, making him a significant long-term financial commitment for any team.

The Greek superstar, Antetokounmpo, has been at the center of trade rumors all season as the Bucks struggle to gain momentum. The former two-time MVP and Defensive Player of the Year is averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game while posting career-high shooting splits of 64.5% from the field and 39.5% from three over 30 games, playing 29.2 minutes per contest.

Even with his efficient production, Milwaukee has slipped to 18-26, sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference.

For now, the scenario is purely hypothetical. Antetokounmpo is sidelined once more with a calf strain, and there’s no clear timetable for his return.
