Dayot Upamecano is holding out for Liverpool to come and sign him
Liverpool appear to be a favoured destination for one of their centre-back targets this year, as he is said to be stalling contract talks with his current club while he waits for the Reds.
That’s according to Sky Sports Germany Florian Plettenberg, who reports that Dayot Upamecano is keen on the idea of moving to Merseyside.
The Reds have been linked with Upamecano over recent months, while Real Madrid have also shown their interest in the France international. The Spanish side had shortlisted the 27-year-old alongside Marc Guehi and Ibrahima Konate, as they were poaching players due to become free agents in the summer.
Dayot Upamecano is ‘waiting’ for Liverpool
Fabrizio Romano initially posted that Bayern Munich had reached a verbal agreement over a new contract for Upamecano, whose current terms expire in June. The length of the deal and his salary had been drawn out but now, he is hesitating on putting pen to paper.
For Sky Germany, Plettenberg revealed: “Everyone is waiting for his commitment, his signature. His contract is ready. But Bayern Munich will not improve their offer.
“Upamecano can sign it, [taking him until] 2030 or 2031. There’s a release clause included from the summer of 2027. He can earn €20m euros gross per year and receive a big signing fee, together with his agent.
“But Bayern is waiting for weeks, they want a decision soon. But my opinion is he’s waiting for Liverpool, for Real Madrid. Liverpool is interested in Upamecano, we can confirm that.”
If Upamecano refuses to sign the deal in place for him at Bayern, he will be available as a free agent at the end of this season.
Will Liverpool make any last-minute signings?
The otherwise out-of-favour midfielder was brought on just minutes into the game to replace an injured Jeremie Frimpong.
Despite these glaring issues, TEAMtalk reports that any late signings during the January transfer window are ‘not on the agenda’ for Liverpool.
Instead, the Reds plan to keep their powder dry in anticipation of another busy and expensive summer. ‘At least four’ new signings are reportedly planned for the end of the season, and a centre-back will be one of them, which is arguably the signing they need most.
